- Angiopathy
Angiopathy is the generic term for a disease of the
blood vessel s (arteries, vein s, and capillaries). [DorlandsDict|one/000005089|angiopathy] The best known and most prevalent angiopathy is the diabetic angiopathy, a complication that may occur in chronicdiabetes .Classification
By caliber
There are two types of angiopathy:
macroangiopathy andmicroangiopathy . In macroangiopathy, fat andblood clot s build up in the large blood vessels, stick to the vessel walls, and block the flow ofblood . In microangiopathy, the walls of the smaller blood vessels become so thick and weak that they bleed, leakprotein , and slow the flow of blood through the body. The decrease of blood flow throughstenosis or clot formation impair the flow ofoxygen to cells andbiological tissue s (calledischemia ) and lead to their death (necrosis andgangrene , which in turn may requireamputation ). Thus, tissues which are very sensitive to oxygen levels, such as theretina , develop microangiopathy and may causeblindness (so-called proliferative diabeticretinopathy ). Damage tonerve cells may cause peripheralneuropathy , and tokidney cells, diabeticnephropathy (Kimmelstiel-Wilson syndrome ).Macroangiopathy, on the other hand, may cause other complications, such as
ischemic heart disease ,stroke and peripheral vascular disease which contributes to the diabeticfoot ulcers and the risk of amputation.By condition
It is also possible to classify angiopathy by the associated condition:
*Diabetic angiopathy
*Congophilic angiopathy References
