Benderli Paşa (Benderli Pasha) was the name of two
Grand Vizier s of theOttoman Empire who were in office between 1821 and 1828. The name "Benderli" indicates their place of origin: the town of Bender (now inMoldova ).Benderli Ali Paşa
Benderli Ali Pasha was the last Grand Vizier, who was executed upon a clear order by the sultan (
Mahmud II ) after only a few days in power (21 April 1821 to30 April 1821 ) due to theGreek War of Independence . According to ottoman biography textbook called "Sicill-i Osmani" in 12 april 1821 he was diminished by Sultan Mahmut and was send to exile in Rhodes where he died later. Controversely according ottoman annales by royal historian Vak'a-nüvis Ahmet Cevdet Efendi (textbook called "Tarih-i Cevdet") he was send in exile to Cyprus and after his departure royal executors were send to the island. Benderli Selim Sirri Pasha (1771 Bender, Moldova – 1831
Istanbul ,Turkey ) ruled from15 September 1824 until26 October 1828 as Grand Vizier of sultanMahmud II and failed in the fight against the Greek revolt, too: the disaster of the Turkish-Egyptian fleet in theBattle of Navarino (1827) happened during his period in office. Unlike Ali Pasha, he was not killed. In 1828-30 he becameWali (governor) ofRumelia (Turkish Balkan provinces) and 1830-31 Wali of Damascus (Syria ).ee also
