Jerry Uht Park , located in downtown Erie; opened in 1995, it seats 6,000 fans. The team began play at the AA level in1999 as an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels before switching to theDetroit Tigers in2001 .The SeaWolves name refers to Erie's location along
Lake Erie , as well as the relationship between the original SeaWolves A team and thePittsburgh Pirates . Historically speaking, the term "sea wolves" was synonymous with "pirate": individuals who commit or practice piracy. The team colors are black and orange.Prior to the establishment of the Eastern League franchise, they were an A-level affiliate of the
Pittsburgh Pirates in theNew York - Penn League from1995 to1998 . Afterwards, the SeaWolves (keeping its past records and history) moved to the Eastern League, while theMahoning Valley Scrappers were formed in their place.
