Abune Dioskoros is the government sanctioned Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. His right to the Patriarchal throne of Eritrea is challenged by those who believe his enthronement was uncannonical. He is the former bishop of the Seraye diocese. Following the dethronement and arrest of the Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Church, Abune Antonios by the Eritrean government, Abune Dioskoros of Seraye served briefly as the senior cleric of the church. In May 2007, Abune Dioskoros was enthroned as the new Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. His succession to the Patriarchate is not recognized by the Coptic Orthodox Church or by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church which are the two mother churches of the Eritrean Church.
