Beverley Lanita Callender (nee Goddard) (born
28 August ,1956 ) is a British athlete who competed for Great Britain and Reading Athletic Club mainly in the100 metres 200 metres and 4x100m Relay. She represented Great Britain in the
1980 Summer Olympics held inMoscow in the4 x 100 metres where she won the bronze medal with her team matesHeather Hunte ,Kathy Smallwood-Cook andSonia Lannaman there they set a British Record which still stands 28 years on.She also competed in the
1984 Summer Olympics inLos Angeles in the 4 x 100 metres where she won the bronze medal with her team matesSimone Jacobs ,Kathy Smallwood-Cook and Heather Oakes. The 1983 relay team of
Joan Baptiste ,Kathy Cook , Beverley andShirley Thomas won a silver in the first ever World Athletics Championship sprint relay final. Beverley ran a superb leg as usual however the favourites the GDR romped home by nearly a second. In fact the Great Britain women's 4x100 m relay team never lost out on a major championship medal from 1978- 1984 including European and Commonwealth honours.
Beverley usually ran the third leg and became a specialist in this position, as is evident all her major medals came as a member of the sprint relay team. Modern U.K Womens sprint relay teams have not come close to emulating these achievements all the more remarkable as many of their rivals at this time were competing illegally.
Beverley a teacher is still active at Reading Athletic Club and is found each week coaching athletes there.
