U Thong is an ancient city. Archaeologists found many pre-historic instruments and human skeletons in many parts of the district. It was one of the center cities of
Dvaravati culture. Later, it also became the origin ofAyutthaya kingdom , as the first King of AyutthayaRamathibodi was prince of U Thong before.U Thong district was created with the name Chorakhe Sam Phan in 1905. In 1940, the government moved the central of district from Ban Chorakhe Sam Phan to the area of the ancient city. At the same time, they also changed the district name to U Thong.
