The district was established in 1896. In the past the area of the district included U Thong district. Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) U Thong and Bang Pla Ma of Suphanburi Province, Lat Bua Luang of
Ayutthaya Province , Bang Len and Kamphaeng Saen ofNakhon Pathom Province , and Tha Maka and Phanom Thuan ofKanchanaburi Province .The main water resource of the district is the

The district is subdivided into 15 subdistricts ("
tambon "), which are further subdivided into 140 villages ("muban "). There are two municipalities ("thesaban tambon ") within the district - the town ("thesaban mueang ") Song Phi Nong covers the complete "tambon" Song Phi Nong, and the subdistrict municipality ("thesaban tambon ") Thung Khok covers part of the "tambon" Thung Khok. Each of the subdistricts, except Song Phi Nong, has aTambon administrative organization .References
