Saint Maria Goretti High School is a catholic school within the Archdiocese of Baltimore. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, within the tri-state areas of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, Eastern Maryland, and Southern Pennsylvania.
Who and where
Saint Maria Goretti High School is located in Hagerstown, Maryland and the school has been in operation since 1933. From 1933 to 1955 the school was titled St. Mary's High School but in 1955 the school earned its new name.
Maria Goretti was an Italian girl who was "murdered to protect her purity" per quote of Goretti's website, www.goretti.org.
"St. Maria Goretti High School was named after a young Italian girl, Maria Goretti, who was murdered in order to protect her purity. She asked for forgiveness for her assassin to a visiting priest just before her death, and later she was said to have appeared to her accuser in a dream in which she personally granted him forgiveness and an armful of white lilies as a peace offering. Maria Goretti led a very ordinary life. But in spite of her simplicity, her great faith and love for God made her truly extraordinary."
Goretti currently has more than 225 students.
Athletics
St. Maria Goretti is a member of the Baltimore Catholic League in basketball. The most notable athlete-alumnus of the school is Rodney Monroe, who went on to college stardom at NC State University and is the ACC's 4th-all-time leading scorer and was the 1991 ACC Player of the Year.
During the 2000-2001 varsity tennis season, the Gaels defeated North High (who was riding a two year undeafeated streak). The final score was 3-2.
In 2003, the varsity men's soccer team went 11-11-1 and won the Private School State Championship. The following year they went 12-12-2 and finished runners-up. In 2005 they went 16-3-2 and won the Apple Valley League Championship.
