Dick Lane (baseball)

Dick Lane (baseball)

Richard Harrison Lane (born June 28, 1927 in Highland Park, Michigan) is a former Major League Baseball left fielder. He played for the Chicago White Sox during the middle of the 1949 season (June 20-July 8), making his major league debut against the Washington Senators at Griffith Stadium.

Lane was a typical example of what Mike González termed "good field, no hit." In 12 games he hit just .119 (5-for-42...all singles) with four runs batted in and four runs scored. Five walks, however, pushed his on base percentage up to .213. Lane was solid defensively, though, handling 27 chances flawlessly for a fielding percentage of 1.000.

One of his teammates on the '49 White Sox was Hall of Fame shortstop Luke Appling, who at the age of 42 hit .301 during his last season as a regular.
