- Violent Cases
"
Violent Cases " is a shortgraphic novel written byNeil Gaiman and illustrated byDave McKean . For both creators it was their first published graphic novel work incomics . First published in black and white byTitan Books in1987 , it was originally drawn in shades of blue, brown and grey, and later editions have been printed in colour.A narrator, who is drawn to look like Gaiman, tells of how, as a small child in
Portsmouth , he was taken by his father to be treated by anosteopath who was once employed byAl Capone . The nature of the narrator's relationship with his father, the tales the osteopath told, and the disturbing events that followed, are partially obscured by the narrator's imperfect recall of things he was not old enough to understand at the time.As with many of Gaiman's other works (most notably "The Sandman") "Violent Cases" is a story about stories, and its themes of early childhood perception and the nature of memory are visited again in
1994 's "Mr. Punch " (also with Dave McKean).External links
