School of the Woods was founded by Dr. Ernest Wood and opened in
1962 [http://schoolofthewoods.org/cgi-bin/site.cgi?t=10&p=history/index.html] . The school was originally located on the Unitarian Fellowship Campus which occupied the 1321 Wirt Road address in the city of Hilshire Village. In 1975 the school acquired the property at 1321 Wirt Road.A middle school with 7th and 8th grades was added in 1984. In the Fall of 1999 a high school was added with the first freshman class which later became the first graduating class in the Fall of 2003.
Sherry Herron has been Head of the School since 1977.
