hard rock bandGuns N' Roses from "Use Your Illusion I ", one of two albums released by the band in 1991 in conjunction with theUse Your Illusion Tour . The song is one of several on the album that is sung byrhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin , rather thanlead singer Axl Rose . It is one of only two Guns N Roses songs of that era to feature an electric guitar solo by Stradlin (the other being the introductory solo toBack Off Bitch ).During the recording of the Illusion albums, a dismembered arm and head were found behind the studio, which Izzy turned into lyrics found in the song. [Bozza, Anthony, & Slash (2007). Slash. Harper Entertainment: New York. p. 316]
The song features a double-tracked lead vocal and usage of phasing. Though it is sung by Stradlin, Rose can be heard providing backing vocals during and after the chorus, with the words "No more patience...man," and "You dig...what I'm sayin'?" It additionally contains a prominent
bass line , played byDuff McKagan . However, it does not featurekeyboardist Dizzy Reed at all.Interestingly, around 2:30 in the song, the
electric guitars and drums fade out, and are suddenly replaced by the sound of Spanish classical guitars playing acoustically to the tune of the song. This unusual outro continues for nearly a minute before the song ends. When the song was played in concert, Rose provided lead vocals with Stradlin performing backing vocals in unison. Often, Rose would 'dedicate' the song to people or organisations he didn't like, including "
Kerrang! " magazine and Stradlin himself, after he had left the band for a second time in 1993. Perhaps the most famous instance of this was when Rose dedicated the song to actorWarren Beatty at the band'sJune 6 ,1992 show inParis (the show was broadcast worldwide onpay-per-view ).
