Eclipse (mints)

Eclipse (mints)

__NOTOC__

Eclipse is a brand of breath mint manufactured by the Wrigley Company of Chicago, Illinois in the United States. They are also manufactured by the Wrigley Company of Songjiang Industrial Zone, Shanghai, China

Description

An Eclipse mint is an oval prism rounded at top and bottom, with the top and bottom half varying colours, depending on the flavour. Spearmint (green), peppermint (blue), and Winterfrost (dark blue) are available, as well as cinnamon (all pink) and orange (light orange).

The ingredients in the Australian and New Zealand cinnamon product are sorbitol, flavour, anticaking agent (470), sweeteners (955, 950) and colours (129, 133); while the orange product contains food acid (330), sweetener (951) (instead of 950), and colours (102, 129) (instead of 129, 133). The orange product advises that it contains Phenylalanine.

Though classified as breath mints, it is unknown if the mints contain active antibacterial ingredients.

Eclipse mints are packaged in a metal box. The top of the box (narrow end) is attached with metal hinge (a true hinge, not a living hinge like many boxed mints). The top may be opened and pushed back on the hinge to gain access to the mints. On opening the box the tagline "powerful fresh breath" is revealed, printed on a raised metal plate on the inner surface of the lid.

50 mints are contained in each package, with a net weight of 34 g (1.2 oz).

Availability

Eclipse mints are sold in Canada under the name Excel. They are sold in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Latvia and Hong Kong under the name Eclipse mints; in Australia they were previously sold under the name Airwaves.

The Australian and New Zealand products contains a French translation on the outer wrapper, even though it is not an official language of either country.

In Canada Excel Mints are sold in cardboard boxes, with both French and English on the box, as required by law. The tag phrases on the box are "Excel-erate Your Breath" and "Rafraichaleine!"

Eclipse gum

Eclipse mints were introduced in 2003 as a brand extension of Eclipse chewing gum.

Other Uses

Eclipse mint tins have become popular in crafts and hobbies. They are being used in scrapbooking, geocaching and the building of miniature castles and forts.
