History of
Belarus ian states can be traced far toPrincipality of Polotsk . From 13th century it belonged toGrand Duchy of Lithuania , then toPolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth . In 19th century Belarus together withLithuania formed theNorthwestern Krai ofRussian Empire . At the beginning of the 20th century there was a short-livedBelarusian National Republic , and in 1922 Belarus became part of theUSSR asBelarusian SSR .
