computer game . The game was both developed and published byPangea Software ."Bugdom" was developed for the Macintosh and was included with the
iMac DV 2000 and lateriBook models. "Bugdom" was later ported to the PC.Overview
The game is set in an outdoors bug environment. The player guides Rollie McFly, a
pillbug , through 10 levels to save the insect kingdom from falling under the rule of the evil ants. Along the way, the player and Rollie must ingeniously defeat enemy bugs and bosses to advance to the next level. Rollie travels through the land of Bugdom, a once peaceful place overthrown by the clan of the Fire Ants who captured all of the Lady Bugs and held them as prisoners. The leader of the Fire Ants, King Thorax, became the new king of Bugdom. Rollie's mission is to travel to the ant hill and defeat King Thorax so that Bugdom will return back to the peaceful place it had once used to be.Gameplay
Players navigate through ten different stages as Rollie. Rollie has the ability to jump, kick, and roll, the latter two of which can be used to attack most hostile enemies. Nuts are scattered throughout the level which, upon being opened, have power-ups, keys, clovers, or enemies. Gates can only be opened when Rollie has the appropriate colored key. Lady bugs are trapped at several points of each level and can be freed by kicking their cage. When Rollie reaches the level exit, the players score is tallied based on the number of ladybugs freed, the number of clovers found, and if all four pieces of the blue clover has been found.
* Level 1: Training - Takes place in a lawn. It is the easiest level and contains some gates with keys and some mild enemies ants, slugs, a boxer fly, and 2 bugs that are only found by the blue clover near start.
* Level 2: The Lawn - The general landscape is similar to Level 1, though much larger, and there is quite a bit of water to navigate. There is a significantly larger amount of enemies. The ants in this level not only throw spears, but some can throw rocks as well. It contains two gates each with the colors blue and green.
* Level 3: The Pond - Takes place in a lake. New enemies appear, including deadly fish and mosquitoes. The player can ride the water-taxi after the coins are found. There are 3 taxies and coins each.
* Level 4: The Forest - Takes place in an area that appears to be a forest. This level is harder than the previous level. Feet try to squish Rollie McFly. Bees, caterpillars, and spiders appear for the first time. The player rides on adragonfly for part of the level, however flying over the fence will result into being eaten by a bat.
* Level 5: The Hive Attack - This is the first boss level. The environment is similar to the forest level (level 4). The objective is to destroy the beehive located in the middle of the level by shooting fire balls at it while riding the dragonfly. Each time the beehive is hit, some bees will come out from the door and start attacking Rollie McFly.
* Level 6: The Bee Hive - Takes place in a beehive. This is the first indoor level of the game. Inside the beehive, one will encounter worker bees and smaller bees. There are also streams of honey that must be crossed by jumping from platform to platform.
* Level 7: The Queen Bee - This is the second boss level and it takes place in a beehive. Defeat the Queen Bee.
* Level 8: Night Attack - This level takes place outdoors and is the largest level in the entire game. The object is to journey to the ant hill at night. This level also features many new enemies such as fire-breathing ants that can fly and toxic gas roaches that leave explosive gas trails behind them. There are also swarms of fireflies that must be avoided before they carry you to undesirable places which will hinder your progress. Throughout the level are cherry bombs and firecrackers that can be used to kill enemy bugs.
* Level 9: The Ant Hill - This is the third indoor level. The enemies in this level include toxic gas roaches, spear-carrying ants, and fire-breathing ants. Unlike previous levels, it is a bad thing to kill spear-carrying ants, because if they die, they will resurrect in the form of a ghost ant and would become immune to physical attacks. However, they can still drown if they fall into water or lava. The lava in this level can only be crossed by using the roots that are hanging down from the ceiling. Falling into the lava would mean instant death, similar to the honey in Level 6.
* Level 10: The Ant King - The third and final boss level with an environment similar to that of Level 9 but without the lava or swinging roots. The object is to defeat King Thorax.equel
There is also a sequel to Bugdom, which is called
Bugdom 2 . It featured a similar style of gameplay, but with a grasshopper as the protagonist and more varied level types.ee also
