The band originally had a more traditionalrockabilly sound, but later moved away from this and now relies more on its punk and hillbilly influences. Founding memberCol. J.D. Wilkes is the band's vocalist and also plays theharmonica . Musical maverickJoeBuck joined the band in the early 21st Century and played all the upright bass, guitar s, and drums on the group's 2003 release, "Cock-A-Doodle-Don't". Wilkes is noted for his wild stage antics, which have been compared to those ofIggy Pop , David Byrne, and evenMarilyn Manson . JoeBuck left the band in late 2003, and is currently touring and recording withHank Williams III .Duane Denison , former member of The Jesus Lizard (and Hank Williams III) currently plays guitar for the band. The band regularly tours with The Reverend Horton Heat, and in

Although not legendary upon being named, the band has grown into its own shoes over the last several years due to a grueling tour schedule spanning the globe. The band has toured with
Reverend Horton Heat ,Robert Plant , Rancid,Slim Cessna's Auto Club , andHank Williams III , among others. In 2003, "Time Out New York Magazine" said The Legendary Shack Shakers were "Among Top Ten Live NYC acts of the year".Jello Biafra ofAlternative Tentacles and TheDead Kennedys called J.D. Wilkes "the last great Rock and Roll frontman." "News Of The World" called them "The maddest, baddest, most outrageous band in America.. a rockabilly version of theSex Pistols ." The "Nashville Scene" called Wilkes the Best Frontman in Nashville in a 2002 vote.According to a police report, the lead singer of a Nashville band exposed himself on stage June 27, 2008 at Rockettown in Nashville TN. The affidavit references a security worker who witnessed Joshua D. Wilkes, lead singer of The Legendary Shack Shakers, "flash" the audience as a prank during a warm-up set for the punk band
Rancid . An arrest warrant was mistakenly reportedly to have been issued, and a retraction was never published byThe Tennessean nor any other media outlet covering the incident.Trivia
