May 20 ,1879 – December 1980) was a notedIndianapolis surgeon who specialized in the treatment ofGoitre andthyroid problems, developing many innovative surgical techniques for these conditions.He was born in
Pike County, Indiana and went to high school inPetersburg, Indiana . After two years atWabash College he transferred toIndiana University and received the M.D. degree in 1902. He was one of the founders of theIndiana University Medical School and practiced in the Indianapolis area until well into his 80's. By 1970 he had performed over 22,000 operations on the thyroid. He was also a pioneeringaeronaut , who won theNational Balloon Race in 1909. He was also an amateurastronomer . He built a convert|36|in|mm|sing=ontelescope in his ownobservatory , which was donated toIndiana University in 1947 and named theGoethe Link Observatory . An asteroid,1728 Goethe Link , discovered at the observatory in 1964, was named for him.References
