State Route 78 is a primary state highway in Wise County, Virginia, United States, running north from U.S. Route 23 Business in Appalachia to a point south of Stonega. The road continues an additional 2.11 miles (3.40 km) to a dead end as State Route 600.

SR 78 begins at U.S. Route 23 Business in the town of Appalachia, where the old alignment splits from the new to cross Callahan Creek and a railroad on a sweeping bridge. SR 78 crosses that creek on old US 23 Business and then turns north, passing under the new US 23 Business. It heads north, paralleling the creek and railroad, each of which split into multiple branches along the way, passing Andover on its way to Stonega. SR 78 becomes SR 600 at an arbitrary point south of Stonega, and SR 600 dead-ends at on unnamed location after passing Stonega.

All of SR 78 outside Appalachia was numbered SR 600 in the 1930s. [http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/cgi-bin/vhip_annotated/vhip.pl?&
] , revised July 1, 1936] In 1942, the present length of SR 78 was transferred to the primary system [PDFlink| [http://www.virginiadot.org/meetings/minutes_pdf/CTB-09-1942-01.pdf Minutes of the Meeting of the State Highway Commission of Virginia, held in Richmond, September 15, 1942] |298 KiB , page 14] as State Route 62. The current State Route 62 was added in 1946 to match North Carolina Highway 62, [PDFlink| [http://www.virginiadot.org/meetings/minutes_pdf/CTB-05-1946-01.pdf Minutes of the Meeting of the State Highway Commission of Virginia, Held in Roanoke May 2 and Richmond May 3, 1948] |326 KiB , page 5] and at that time SR 62 was renumbered State Route 78.
