WAOW-TV channel 9 is an ABC affiliate which serves Wausau, Wisconsin. They also operate a satellite station in Eagle River, Wisconsin, WYOW channel 34 plus a cable/digital CW subchannel. Wausau cable viewers also see CW programming on basic cable channel 8.

WAOW's transmitter is located in Wausau, Wisconsin on Rib Mountain. WYOW's transmitter is located on Thunder Lake Rd. in Sugar Camp. Both WAOW and WYOW are owned by Quincy Newspapers.

History

WAOW is Wausau's second television station having signed on the air on June 12, 1965 serving as a satellite station of Madison, Wisconsin's WKOW as part of the Wisconsin Television Network, which would later include WXOW in La Crosse and WQOW in Eau Claire. By the 1980s the station would gradually start focusing more on the Wausau/Rhinelander market by adding local programming and content.

On New Year's Day 1997, WAOW opened a satellite channel, WYOW, to expand its coverage area in northeastern Wisconsin and parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

On December 1, 1999 a third station in the DMA, WFXS Fox 55 went on the air; the stations are owned by different companies, but WFXS contracted WAOW to provide news and weather resources on the station.

WAOW had also previously aired Fox's NFL package from 1994-1999 after the NFC contract and rights for most Green Bay Packers games moved from CBS (locally, WSAW channel 7), due to the lack of a local Fox affiliate.
