Well-formed Petri net

Well-formed Petri net

Well-formed Petri nets are a Petri net class jointly elaborated between the University of Paris 6 (Université P. & M. Curie) and the University of Torino in the early 1990s.

It is a restrictions of the high-level nets (or colored Nets) introduced by K. Jensen. The main avantage of Well Formed Nets is the notion of symbolic reachability graph that is composed of "symbolic states". A symbolic state is a state representing several concrete states in the state space of the system described by the Petri net. So, much larger state spaces can be represented (the gain factor can be up to exponential). This notion of symblic state space requires that only a limited set of operators are available (identify, broadcast, successor and predecessor functions are allowed on circular finite types).
