suburb to the east of the city ofNottingham in the borough ofGedling . It is close toSneinton ,Bakersfield ,Mapperley , andSt Anns . It is near theRiver Trent and has an NG4postcode .The main shopping street is Carlton Hill, which has several shopping chains, and smaller shops such as
newsagent s,chemist s, andgrocer s. There is also a fairly large shopping area in Carlton Square, the traditional centre of Carlton (which is currently undergoing redevelopment) when and where CarltonUrban District Council was based before Carlton became part of Gedling Borough council in 1974. Before then the area was used by Carlton Central Primary School for almost a hundred years up until the 1960s. After a piece of masonry fell one night from the roof into the school assembly area the school was demolished and the council house and the current Carlton Square was built in its place. Fortunately a new school had been built on Foxhill Road/Carlton Hill, and Carlton Central Primary School was relocated there. The new school had originally been built to replace the deteriorating St Paul's School on Carlton Hill. St Paul's was closed in 1983 after many years and attempts to find a new site and financing for a new building were unsuccessful, leaving Carlton Central Primary School as the only primary school in Carlton. Now there is also 'The Sacred Heart' Roman Catholic primary school situated on Southcliffe Road, this was formerly known as 'St Augustines'.There is a railway station on the
Nottingham to Lincoln Line . There is aTesco supermarket on Carlton Hill which was built on top of where St Paul's Primary School stood from around 1880 until 1983. The school itself was built next to a 17th century graveyard, which was relocated when the Tesco supermarket was built. The rector of St Paul's performed an exorcism and there have been no reports since.Fact|date=May 2008Carlton is also where the Midlands Academy of Dance & Drama (also known as MADD) is based.
