Jorge Mayer (born
20 November 1915 ) is theRoman Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of theArchdiocese of Bahía Blanca ,Argentina .He was born in
San Miguel ,Buenos Aires Province . Ordained priest onMarch 24 1940 , he becomebishop of theDiocese of Santa Rosa ,La Pampa Province , onJuly 9 ,1957 . OnMay 31 ,1972 Pope Paul VI appointed him Archbishop of Bahía Blanca, succeedingGerminiano Esorto . He took over in a formal Mass onJuly 21 ,1972 until he resigned to his Pastoral task onMay 31 ,1991 , upon turning 80 years of age, as established by the Pope. He was succeeded byRómulo García , becoming thenArchbishop Emeritus , where he continues working activelyas of 2006 , despite his age. Mayer's native tongues are Spanish and German as he was born in a colony ofVolga German settlers in Argentina, but he also speaks fluent Italian among other languages.During the 1980s and 1990s he led many groups of pilgrims from Bahía Blanca to
