Komala's Restaurants is a
Singapore -basedrestaurant -chain servingIndian vegetarian cuisine . The group has restaurants overseas inIndia ,Thailand ,Indonesia andCanada . Started in1947 byMurugiah Rajoo in Singapore, the restaurant became known for the low priced high quality Indian food. The restaurant is popular with all walks of life, and its part of theKomala's Group . Komala's introduced anIndian vegetarian fast food restaurant in July1995 at Little India in a Western-style environment. A year later, it opened a high end Indian restaurant known as "The Gangzes" and in 1997, it formed Komala's Group to be the parent company of Komala's Restaurants. Two Komala's restaurants opened in 1998 in thecity centre , one atScotts Shopping Centre at the primeOrchard Road shopping belt and the other atPeninsula Plaza inDowntown Core .In
1999 , Komala's opened a franchise pilot outlet cum cooking school inChennai ,India , and there was a launch of Komala's franchise. The Gangzes was launced in Chennai in the year2000 , and a franchise outlet opened atKuala Lumpur ,Malaysia . It later opened a number of franchise outlets overseas, but most eventually closed. In2002 , it opened a fast food restaurant atMarine Cove atEast Coast Park and a franchise outlet opened inBangkok ,Thailand a few months later. The year2003 saw Komala's launching delivery service for its fast food. Komala's opened an outlet atSerangoon Plaza and a franchise outlet inIndonesia in 2004, The Gangzes also opened at Serangoon Plaza that year. Between 2004 and 2005, Komala's opened three new restaurants in Singapore, which has since closed. In 2005, Komala's made foray into theNorth America n market with its first restaurant in Scarborough,Toronto , Canada.
