Whetstone High School (Columbus, Ohio)

Whetstone High School (Columbus, Ohio)

Whetstone High School is a public high school located on the north side of Columbus, Ohio. It is a part of Columbus City Schools. The school opened in 1961 and notable alumni include Thomas R. Carper (class of 1964), a United States Senator from Delaware.

The school's mascot is the Brave.

At school functions where the National Anthem is played students are known to rephrase the last line, yelling "And the Home of the "BRAVES"!"

The Whetstone football team improved their record this year to 6-4 winning three more games than last year. The team looked strong this year and should make it to the playoffs next season.

The boys finished 4th in cross-country at the city league championship in 2006. They finished behind Brookhaven, West, Eastmoor, and Northland. But, the braves are in contention again due to new recruits. In 2007 the cross country team finished second behind West High School for second place.

Whetstone High School was built to accommodate the overflow from Columbus North High School (located on Arcadia Ave. in North Columbus). The expanding student base brought on by growth in North Columbus created the need for an additional school.

Another notable alum is Alex Grey (Velzy) [class of 1971?] an artist of some renown currently located in New York City.

The "Hill" was a gathering area for students during the school day and after school. Various hi-jinks were performed during the late 60's and early 70's including "seeing the passing moon" if you had class along Henderson Road.

The graduating class of 1971 was 481 students.

The boys Basketball team (2007-2008), with a final record of 9-11 finished 4th in the City League North, behind Northland, Brookhaven, and Beechcroft.
