Brentwood is a local government district and

It is named after the town of Brentwood which is the main development in the area. Originally 'Burnt wood' as the area was largely used by Charcoal Burners. There are still large areas of woodland including Shenfield Common, Hartswood (named after its last private owner Mr. Hart, now open to public),
Weald Country Park , and Thorndon Country Park. The district was formed in 1974 from the former area ofBrentwood Urban District ,Epping and Ongar Rural District and part ofChelmsford Rural District . Byroyal charter , the district became a borough on27 April 1993 .Boundaries
To the north west it borders the Epping Forest district and to the east it borders Basildon district. To the south west the borough has a boundary with Greater London and the
London Borough of Havering with theM25 motorway forming part of theGreater London boundary. TheLondon, Tilbury and Southend Railway forms the southern boundary with the borough and unitary authority ofThurrock .Transport
The main transport links run in a south-west to north east direction through the Borough with other important links running west to east.
Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone railway stations connect to Liverpool Street (westbound) in the
City of London , and to Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea (eastbound); whilst West Horndon connects to Fenchurch Street (westbound), also in theCity of London , and to Tilbury and Southend-on-Sea (eastbound).Shenfield is at a major rail junction with eastbound routes to
Southend-on-Sea andSouthminster and north-easterly main line to East Anglia. Fast main line services operate from Liverpool Street to Shenfield and, to a lesser extent, Ingatestone while Brentwood is served by a high frequency but slower stopping service.A major artery running through the borough is the A12 dual-carriageway, running from
London toChelmsford , thenColchester , the ports ofHarwich andFelixstowe ,Ipswich ,Lowestoft , and finallyGreat Yarmouth . The old Roman road (A1023) goes right through the centre of Brentwood and joins the A12 (that bypasses the town) at the far ends of Brentwood. Within different parts of Brentwood the A1023 is called (from west to east) Brook Street, London Road, High Street, Shenfield Road, and Chelmsford Road. The other main road is the A127 which separates from the A12 nearRomford and then proceeds easterly toSouthend-on-Sea .Brentwood Borough Council
