Šolta (Italian: "Solta") is an island in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea. It is situated in the Central Dalmatian archipelago, west of the island of Brač (separated by Strait of Split), south of Split (separated by Split channel) and east of the Drvenik islands (separated by the Šolta channel) [http://www.kroatien-online.com/en/tourism/islands/solta.htm Šolta on Kroatien-online.com] ] . Its area is 58.98 km², and it has a population of 1,479 (as of 2001). [http://www.dzs.hr/Hrv_Eng/ljetopis/2005/00-sadrzaj.pdf Statistical yearbook for 2006 of the Central Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Croatia] ] The highest peak of Šolta is the summit Vela StražaGE-YLZ|8|Šolta] which is 238 metres high. On the north-eastern coast of the island there are the large bays of Rogač and Nečujam. In the western part of the interior of Šolta there is a field approximately 6km long and 2 km wide. The economy of the island is based on vineyards, olives, fruit, fishing and tourism. While the main settlements (Grohote, Gornje Selo, Srednje Selo, Donje Selo) are inland, the main fishing centres are Maslinica, which is exposed to only north-westerly winds, making it a good shelter for smaller boatsand Stomorska. Rogač is the main port and Nečujam the center of the island’s tourism.
