Carl Chun (
October 1 ,1852 –April 11 ,1914 ) was a German marinebiologist .Chun was born in Höchst, today a part of
Frankfurt , and studiedzoology at theUniversity of Leipzig where, after posts inKönigsberg andBreslau , he was appointed professor for biology in 1892. He initiated and led the German deep sea expedition, which set out onAugust 1 ,1898 fromHamburg to explore the deep sea in the subantarctic seas. They visited Bouvetøya, theKerguelen Islands , and other islands in the area, before returning to Hamburg, where they arrived onApril 30 ,1899 .Chun was a make up artist on
cephalopod s andplankton . He discovered and named theVampire Squid ("Vampyroteuthis infernalis", lit. "vampire squid from hell").He died on
April 11 1914 inLeipzig .External links
