Salisbury is a local government district in
Wiltshire ,England . It was formed in1974 . Its main town is the city of Salisbury.There is no authority called "Salisbury City Council". The City of Salisbury, only one-sixtieth of the area of the district, is unparished; since
1974 its dignity & privileges have been vested inCharter Trustees .The district was formed on
April 1 ,1974 , under theLocal Government Act 1972 , as a merger of the previousmunicipal borough s ofNew Sarum (Salisbury) and Wilton, along withAmesbury Rural District ,Mere and Tisbury Rural District andSalisbury and Wilton Rural District .On 25th July 2007 the
Department for Communities and Local Government announced that the district will be abolished as part of the2009 structural changes to local government in England .Political control
Control of the authority shifted in the elections of May 2007 from Conservative to no overall control, the current administration being formed by a coalition of Liberal Democrat and Labour councillors. Representation on the council is as follows:
