Ohio onMay 26 ,1945 .He was appointed an Auxiliary Bishop in Cleveland in June 1961 as well as
Titular Bishop ofAndrapa . He was consecrated a bishop a month later.In December 1966, Whealon was appointed the Bishop of Erie,
Pennsylvania .Two years later, he came to Hartford,
Connecticut to head the Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford. He was installed onMarch 19 ,1969 as the second Archbishop of Hartford and served here until the time of his death in August 1991.The Archbishop died unexpectedly during a routine surgical procedure at
St. Francis Hospital in Hartford.The Archdiocese's annual fundraising golf tournament is named in his honor. Additionally, the Waterbury chapter of the Knights of Columbus bears his name - the Archbishop John F. Whealon Council 10865.
