Zoldyck Family

Zoldyck Family

The Zoldyck Family, also known as the Zaoldyeck Family, is a famous fictional family of assassins appearing in the Japanese manga and anime series Hunter × Hunter.

The Zoldyck family is considered by and far the most deadly of assassins in the Hunter × Hunter world. The family owns and lives at Kukuroo mountain, a dormant volcano in the Dentora region of the Republic of Padokea [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 05|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 038|pages=Pg.62|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] . Their estate is surrounded by huge stone walls guarded by a giant dog named Mike and highly skilled attendants. Few people unrelated to the family have any idea what is within the estate. There is lots of mystery surrounding the Zoldyck family; a single photo of any of the members can be sold for millions.

Children in the family are trained from birth in the art of assassination, although each member of the family has the privilege to choose the specialty of their forte and liking as they grow up. For example, the oldest child Illumi seems to be a master of disguise; where as the next oldest, Milluki, is a computer wizard and expert hacker. In every generation, there appears to be a prodigy child whom would be named as their heir. Currently, the heir to the Zoldyck business is Killua, one of the four main characters of Hunter × Hunter, though Killua has stated that he has no desire to inherit his family's occupation.

It is believed that each member of Zoldyck's family begun their training from their date of birth. They possesses a unique set of talents: resistance to almost all types of poison [Killua's conversation with Tonpa about the drugged soft drinks. cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 01|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 006|pages=Pg.130|isbn=978-1-59116-753-2] , the ability to tolerate high amounts of electricity [Killua's speech to Riehlvelt. cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 07|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 059|pages=Pg.096|isbn=978-1-4215-0332-5] , and immense strength (Killua was able to open a 16-ton door before receiving any form of nen training [Zebro's explanation about the Testing Gate. cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 05|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 039|pages=Pg.85|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] ).

Family members

There are currently 10 living members of the Zoldyck family:

Maha

Maha is Zeno's grandfather [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 25|year=2008|publisher=Shueisha|chapter=Chapter 264|pages=Pg.55|isbn=978-4-08-874535-0] and the oldest assassin in the Zoldyck family. Maha has only appeared once in the series along with Kalluto and Illumi on a mission to kill the ten mafia dons in Yorknew City. Maha is the only Enhancer in the Zoldyck family, and is the eldest Zoldyck at the age of 98. It is also noted by Zeno that Chairman Netero is the only man alive that has ever survived a fight with him.

Zeno Zoldyck (ゼノ=ゾルディック "Zeno Zorudikku") is Killua's grandfather and Silva's father. A witty old man, his advancing age has not dampened his quick thinking and speed in battle. Zeno wears alternating signs on his garb that say either "A Kill A Day" or "Never Retire." [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 11|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 095|pages=Pg.28|isbn=978-1-4215-0646-3] He appears to be on good terms with the Hunter Committee's Chairman, Netero, who hired Zeno to assault Ming Jol-ik's palace in East Gorteau in order to catch the chimera ant King off guard.

* Nen ability - Dragon Head: Long-Tou Xi-Hua 「龍頭戯画」 [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 11|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 099|pages=Pg.112|isbn=978-1-4215-0646-3] Zeno's nen ability, the Dragon Head, was first revealed in his battle against Chrollo Lucilfer. Zeno can emit his aura in a form of a dragon. These dragons are connected in which every movement are controlled through precised locomotion of his hand. Variants of this technique include the Dragon Lance, a straight shot of aura in the shape of a Dragon [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 11|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 099|pages=Pg.113|isbn=978-1-4215-0646-3] , and the Dragon Dive, wherein the dragon shatters in hundreds of smaller aura-dragons and rains down from the sky.

Silva Zoldyck (シルバ=ゾルディック "Shiruba Zorudikku") is Killua's father. A silent, pensive figure, Killua's interaction with him seems not much. He allows Killua to go along with Gon on their journey to find his father, but only because he sees it as a crucial step in his development as the head assassin of the Zoldyck Family. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 042|pages=Pg.145|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] During the Southernpiece Auction in Yorknew City, Silva and Zeno are both hired by the mafia's dons to assassinate the Phantom Troupe, but withdraw from the job when their clients are killed due to a job taken by Illumi, Maha, and Kalluto. Silva recently appeared amid the assault on the Palace in East Gorteau, killing Cheetu on the way to pick up his father.

Kikyō Zoldyck (キキョウ=ゾルディック "Kikyō Zorudikku") is Killua's mother. She was injured attempting to prevent Killua from running away from home to take the Hunter Exam, although she is proud of Killua for doing so.cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 036|pages=Pg.9|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] She is the maternal figure of the Zoldyck family and is an assassin herself. She seems to be slightly paranoid and is cautious of Killua's friends. Kikyō is looking forward in Killua to excel in assassination and anticipate that one day, he will continue on with the family business.

Kikyō is 170 centimeters tall and dresses in Victorian-era clothing. Her face is covered in bandages and has an electronic visor covering her eyes. The visor is capable of being used as a communications device [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 05|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 042|pages=Pg.138|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] , although what other purpose it suits is unknown.

Illumi Zoldyck (イルミ=ゾルディック "Irumi Zorudikku") is Killua's eldest brother. He is an experienced assassin, whom along with his father was responsible for Killua's training and upbringing. During the 287th Hunter's Exam, Illumi disguised and concealed his appearance, using special pins to change his entire facial structure to the point where he can only be recognized by his voice. An oppressive aura from him makes even Killua fearful and wary whenever he approaches Illumi.

Illumi holds a twisted and emotionless love for Killua. Illumi and Silva raised Killua to believe that the only thing sustaining him was darkness, and that the only joy he received through the world was in causing the death of others. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 036|pages=Pg.11|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] He was also responsible for planting a needle within Killua's brain, forcing the latter to run from battles he wasn't sure he could win. Illumi did this to ensure that Killua would able to live to carry on the family business and as a means of protecting his little brother. This needle is self-extracted by Killua in the battle against Rammot.

A certain amount of friendship is shared between Hisoka and Illumi, although it is unclear as to how it could have developed. Illumi once came to the aid of Hisoka by standing for him as a double in the Troupe hideout whilst Hisoka attempted to find Chrollo.

Nen Ability
* Although never explicitly stated, Illumi may use his nen in order to assist him in his disguises. Near the end of the Yorknew City arc, he poses as Hisoka as a favor to him, but can only keep his transformation intact for five hours or so without using pins to hold the shape. Besides that ability, he was shown controlling the recently deceased body of one of the Ten Dons during the Phantom Troupe arc. He has also used his pins to force an assistant helping the Hunter Test examiners to truthfully answer his question, however, it is unclear whether the pins forced him to only tell the truth or whether it was due to the pain and disfiguration the pins caused.

Milluki Zoldyck (ミルキ=ゾルディック "Miruki Zorudikku") is Killua's second eldest brother and an obese figure who possesses a strong aversion to performing any kind of physical activity. In fact, prior to the Yorknew City auctions, Milluki had not left the mansion in eight years. He seems to be a sort of otaku, since his room is covered with female figurines from various anime and computer games [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 08|year=2006|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 069|pages=Pg.62|isbn=978-1-4215-0643-2] . Milluki is talented in hacking computer systems, as Killua asked him to hack a memory card from Ging. He was also injured during Killua's escape. Milluki is primarily in charge of torturing Killua as punishment, but doesn't have the drive to carry it out very long as it exhausting and extreme physical exertion is needed. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 042|pages=Pg.128-129|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0]

After being tipped off the whereabouts of Greed Island, Milluki's excitement resulted in one of the rarer moments in which he made an outside expedition in search of the game. However, he was unable to win a copy and left in frustration.

Killua

One of the four main characters of the series, and the third youngest Zoldyck. Killua is considered the most talented Zoldyck of his generation, but rebels against the idea of being an assassin for the rest of his life, escaping from his family's home to take part in the Hunter exam.

Alluka

Alluka Zoldyck is the missing child of the Zoldycks and has only appeared once during the series. In Chapter 229 of the manga, his back is shown in a picture of the five Zoldyck sons along with their mother. His name is officially stated in the official Hunter × Hunter Guide book in a family tree of the Zoldycks. An alternate way of discovering his name is via a pattern seen with the Zoldyck sons from oldest to youngest: IlluMilluKilluAlluKalluto. It is speculated he left his family and that his younger brother Kalluto has joined the Phantom Troupe in order to find him.

Kalluto Zoldyck (カルト=ゾルディック "Karuto Zorudikku") is the younger brother of Killua. He was initially introduced accompanying his mother during Gon's Retrieval of Killua from Kukuroo Mountain. Kalluto appears again during the Phantom Troupe arc, assisting his older brother Illumi with the assassination of the ten mafia dons that had placed bounty on the Phantom Troupe's heads. Kalluto's next appearance was during the Greed Island arc, he is the new member of the Phantom Troupe after Hisoka's departure. Kalluto's reason for joining the Phantom Troupe is that he wishes to bring his brother Alluka back home, and Kalluto feels that this is a stepping stone for him to do so. During this arc, it is introduced that his nen ability has something to do with paper. He can even use paper cutouts for audio surveillance (seen being used to overhear Phantom Troupe's conversation). There is a slight possibility that Kalluto's real intention is to find his other brother Alluka, as revealed in the chimera ant arc of the manga, though this has not been confirmed yet.

Zoldyck family servants

Zebro

Zebro (ゼブロ "Zeburo") is a gatekeeper whose office is located near the entrance of the Zoldyck property. In order to prevent others from entering the Zoldyck estate on Kukuroo Mountain, Zebro holds a key specifically for intruders opening a false gate called the Door to Hades. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 039|pages=Pg.80|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] Behind it is the Zoldyck's monstrous guard dog, Mike, who will promptly dispose of any threat. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 039|pages=Pg.78-79|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] Even though Zebro appears to be an elderly security guard, he is actually heavily muscled and capable of opening the first door of the Testing Gate, weighing four tons. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 039|pages=Pg.82-83|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] -

Canary

Canary (カナリア "Kanaria") is Zoldyck butlers' young apprentice on Kukuroo Mountain. Anyone attempting to pass her post on the estate will be expelled via force. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 041|pages=Pg.111|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] During Gon's expedition to Kukuroo Mountain, Canary refuses to Gon pass her assigned territory, but later accompanies him, Leorio, and Kurapika to the butlers' quarters. When she was first employed, Killua attempted to become friends with Canary by offering her an animal skull. Canary refused--considering her position as a servant, she did not deem it appropriate. [cite book|last=Togashi|first=Yoshihiro|authorlink=Yoshihiro Togashi|title=Hunter × Hunter, Volume 5|year=2005|publisher=Viz Media|chapter=Chapter 042|pages=Pg.127|isbn=978-1-4215-0184-0] However, the skull rests within the ball end of her staff.cite episode | title = Skateboard × Probationer × Real Intention| series = Hunter x Hunter | serieslink = Hunter x Hunter| network = Fuji Television | airdate = 2000-07-15|number=37] Upon Killua's initial return to his home after the Hunter Exam, he also gave Canary his skateboard.

Gotoh

Gotoh (ゴトー "Gotō") is the Zoldyck family's head butler. Highly protective of the Zoldyck family, all outside contact with family members must go through him and will allow no one to see them unless he is ordered to. He cares about them as if they were his own family, but denies being emotionally attached with his employers.
