It is a rural riding in northeast Alberta, representing the municipal districts of Wood Buffalo, Opportunity, Lesser Slave River, Big Lakes and the counties of Lac La Biche, Athabasca and the south-eastern part of Northern Sunrise.History
It was created as "Athabasca" riding in 1966 from Athabaska and Peace River ridings.
In 2004, it was re-named "Fort McMurray-Athabasca".
