Zdenka Cecília Schelingová

Zdenka Cecília Schelingová

Blessed Zdenka Cecília Schelingová (December 24 1916 – July 31 1955), was a Slovak nun of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross and a victim of communist persecution in the former Czechoslovakia.

She was born at Krivá na Orave. She was sentenced in 1952 to twelve (12) years imprisonment for high treason in a fabricated case (sentence was completely canceled from Supreme Court of Slovak Socialist Republic in 1970). [Bl. Zdenka Schelingová on Kňazi.sk; available: http://www.knazi.sk/svati/zsvaty.php?svid=7 (visit 9. 5. 2008)] She was tortured in prison, which took a great toll on her health. As a result of her poor health, she was released early from prison in April 1955 but it was too late; she died in Trnava, aged 38, later that year as a result of the injuries she suffered.

Beatification

She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
