The College of Fine Arts is one of 14 divisions at the The University of Texas at Austin and consists of five departmental units including the Department of Art and Art History, Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music, Department of Theatre and Dance, Blanton Museum of Art and Performing Arts Center.

Mission

The College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin prepares students for the creation, practice, study, criticism and teaching of the arts, in a context that emphasizes cultural diversity, community engagement and technological innovation.

The College is a leading institution in advancing the arts through research and the creation of new work, preserving the past while striving to define the future of artistic traditions. It is committed to exploring the interrelationships among the arts and among the arts and other disciplines. Through presenting performances and exhibitions, the College seeks to deepen understanding of the arts, to expand audiences, and to enrich the quality of life, at the University, community, state, nation and world.

Department of Art and Art History

The Department of Art and Art History, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), hosts a distinguished faculty of 89 artists, designers, educators and historians. The facilities, activities and programs support a variety of guest artists, guest lecturers and alumni. The department consists of four degree plans: Art History, Design, Studio Art, and Visual Art Studies + Art Education.

The Creative Research Laboratory, located in East Austin, is a site for contemporary art and design, providing a year-round schedule of exhibitions and community programming by students and faculty in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Mesoamerica Center at UT-Austin, the host of the annual Maya meetings, aims to facilitate knowledge and learning about the indigenous cultures and peoples of what is now Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. Its primary focus is on the arts, languages and archaeology of Mesoamerican civilizations.

The UT Visual Arts Center (VAC) is currently undergoing extensive renovations in order to fully integrate and highlight internationally acclaimed student and faculty research.

arah and Ernest Butler School of Music

With nearly 100 faculty members and more than 750 students from around the world, the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music ranks among the top music schools in the country. A distinguished faculty of world-class scholars and performers help to attract and retain talented students in programs that range from composition, performance, teacher training and musicology to jazz and sound engineering.

On March 18, 2008, an endowment of $55 million was established by local philanthropists and arts enthusiasts, Dr. Ernest and Sarah Butler, the single largest gift to any public music school in the country and second overall only to the Yale School of Music ($100 million).fact The Butlers had previously endowed the Opera Center and several faculty chairs at the School of Music.

Department of Theatre and Dance

The Department of Theatre and Dance is home to over 400 majors and 50 faculty and staff, dedicated to the study and practice of a wide array of performance genres. The department exists as a diverse educational community of artists and scholars who are committed to excellence in teaching, research, creative practice and service.

Blanton Museum of Art

The Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art is the fine arts museum of The University of Texas at Austin. As a teaching museum, the Blanton is a catalyst for innovative research and professional training in the visual arts. As Austin's own encyclopedic art museum, the Blanton is a vital cultural cornerstone, strengthening the high quality of life for which the city is known.

Performing Arts Center

The Performing Arts Center is committed to being a teaching facility as well as a performing arts venue that not only educates but entertains.
