History

In 1952, Bishop John Krol, an Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland and superintendent of Catholic Education, had a meeting with Fr. Joseph Buckley SM. On 8 May 1953, the contract to build the new Marist High School was signed by the Rev. Edward McGrath and Archbishop Edward F. Hoban. The Marist Fathers also established then Blessed now St.Pius X Parish.

Archbishop Hoban donated 33 acres to build the new High School. On January 31 1956, construction started on a $1.75 million dollar complex. The new Marist High School was named St. Peter Chanel, the name of the Marist Fathers' first saint. Peter Chanel was named a Saint in 1954, by Pope Pius XII. In the 1985-86 school year, St. Peter Chanel announced it was going co-educational, which would take place the following year.

In 1994, The Marist Fathers left St. Peter Chanel due to lack of vocations and they were replaced for a short time by the Sisters of Notre Dame Cleveland Province.
