Salomon Oppenheim

Salomon Oppenheim, Jr. (1772 - November 8 1828) was a German Jewish banker, born in Mainz, the scion of an illustrious family of "court Jews" ("Hofjuden") who had served as advisers and moneylenders to German princes in the Rhineland area for several generations. In 1789, at the age of 17, Oppenheim set up a small commissions and exchange house in Bonn. Nine years later, he moved to Cologne, where he became banker to the last Archbishop-Elector of Cologne. Oppenheim and his wife Therese had 12 children. After Salomon's death, two of his sons, Simon and Abraham, took over management of the bank. As Sal. Oppenheim, the bank is still in business today and still in the hands of the Oppenheim family, and is the world's largest privately-owned bank.

Oppenheim was the great-grandfather of Anton Graf von Arco auf Valley, who reacted against his Jewish background by becoming an extreme German nationalist and who in 1919 murdered Kurt Eisner, the socialist premier of Bavaria.
