Indiana University Student Foundation

The Indiana University Student Foundation is a not-for-profit student group that was formed by Howdy S. Wilcox.

History

Founded in 1950, the group's original purpose was to help raise campus awareness about the Indiana University Foundation.

Goals

While the IUSF's main goal is to continue to spread the word about the IUF, it also works to sponsor campus events that foster enthusiasm and leadership, raise money for working students, and forge a bond between the students and the University, resulting in strong alumni. IUSF now exists as the student arm of the Indiana University Foundation, a nonprofit organization established to raise funds for the university and its students.

IUSF Events

One of the IUSF's annual events is the ever popular IU Sing. Though the event existed long before the student foundation itself, the IUSF gained sole responsibility for the event in 1979 and has since gone to get lengths in order to take it to the next level. This event's purpose is both to raise awareness about the IU Foundation and to help raise scholarship money.

Along with the IU Sing, one of the most famous and successful IUSF sponsored events is the Little 500. This event was the brain child of Howdy Wilcox, Jr. and the original members of the IUSF. Now held annually in the Bill Armstrong Stadium, the bike race helps the foundation earn thousands of dollars in scholarship money which is then passed on to the IU students. Over the years the event has gained much publicity, particularly after the success of the movie "Breaking Away," and has earn itself the title of the "world's greatest college weekend."

While the planning and preparation of the Little 500 bike races is a large portion of the IU Student Foundation's activities, there are many other annual, campus-wide events which are also solely supported by IUSF. Everything from the performing arts to student recruiting finds a place on the organization's agenda. Members, with the help of advisors and campus officials, provide Indiana University with a diverse array of activities that serve both students and faculty.
