Willows Shoppingtown is a sub-regional shopping centre, located in Kirwan, a suburb of Townsville, Queensland.

History and Development

The centre was purchased by DB RREEF (which has since rebranded to DEXUS Property Group) in 2006 for approximately $100 m AUD (2006).cite news |title=Townsville appeals to Deutsche fund |accessdate=2007-12-26 |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date=2006-10-23 |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher=Inside Retailing |pages=9 |language=en-au |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ]

Redevelopments

In a media release by the local council, they claimed to be expecting a commercial building application from the owners of the center valued at some $50 m AUD (2006). [cite web |url=http://www.thuringowa.qld.gov.au/news/index?media_id=905 |title=Big year ahead for commercial development in Thuringowa |accessdate=2007-12-26 |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date=2006-09-14 |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher=City of Thuringowa |pages= |language=en-au |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ] The development plans for the centre were claimed to have been lodged in August of that year, but did not proceed at the decision of the developer.cite news |title=Sale confirmed Willows owner buys Cannon Park, Sunland |accessdate=2007-12-26 |last=Raggatt |first=Tony |authorlink= |coauthors= |date=2006-10-18 |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher=Townsville Bulletin |pages=4 |language=en-au |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ]

In a change of direction, the owners of the centre put the expansion plans to public comment in November 2007.cite news |title=New direction - Feedback wanted for centre |accessdate=2007-12-26 |last=O'Reilly |first=Jennifer |authorlink= |coauthors= |date=2007-11-15 |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher=Townsville Bulletin |pages=9 |language=en-au |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= ] According to the owners, the center would be expanded along it's northern axis, rather than the western axis as first proposed. While the size of the centre's expansion would remain the same, the change in location would mean the proposed discount department store would be some convert|8500|m2|sqft|0|abbr=on and not convert|5500|m2|sqft|0|abbr=on as previous proposed.Big W is to occupy the proposed discount department store site.
