Anoa'i trained as a wrestler under his uncle,
Afa Anoa'i , debuting in 2002 as Reno the Black Pearl. He went on to wrestle for theCalifornia n Empire Wrestling Federation and thePennsylvania n World Xtreme Wrestling promotion. He eventually shortened his ring name to Black Pearl.In 2005, Anoa'i journeyed to
Italy and began wrestling for his cousin Rikishi'sNu-Wrestling Evolution promotion. In NWE, Anoa'i adopted the gimmick of an aristocrat, claiming to be "The Count of California". OnNovember 25 ,2005 inNaples , he won a tournament to become the first NWE Heavyweight Champion.In wrestling
