Tomás Gustavo Gil Guillén (born
April 19 ,1939 ), better known as Gus Gil, is a formerMajor League Baseball second baseman who played with theCleveland Indians (1967), Seattle Pilots (1969), andMilwaukee Brewers (1970-71).Gil was born in
Caracas, Venezuela . He was a sure-handed fielder and did his job well playing for three teams in four seasons. Unfortunately, like many infielders of his time, Gil had a light bat.Career highlights include:
*a game-tying, 2-run pinch-hitdouble in the top of the 9th against theNew York Yankees , then scored to put the Pilots ahead to stay, winning 5-4 (June 14, 1969)
*awalk-off , 2-run double with two outs in the bottom of the 9th for the Brewers as they came from behind and defeated theMinnesota Twins , 4-3 (June 23, 1970)
*drove in both Milwaukee runs with a pair ofsacrifice flies in a 2-1 win over theKansas City Royals (July 5, 1970)
*hit the first and onlyhome run of his major league career, a solo shot againstChicago White Sox left-handerJim Magnuson (August 5, 1970)
*hit a combined .469 (15-for-32) againstAll-Star pitchers Rollie Fingers ,Mudcat Grant ,Lindy McDaniel ,Blue Moon Odom , Gary Peters,Sonny Siebert , andMel Stottlemyre In his career, Gil batted .186 (87-for-468) with one
home run , 27 RBI, 34 runs, 16 doubles and fivestolen base s. His performance as a fielder was much better, with 186 putouts, 192 assists and 36double play s, but only 5 errors out of 383total chances for a .982 fielding percentage.External links
