New Testament epistles of Philemon and Colossians.Role in scripture
In Paul's letter to Philemon (bibleref|Philemon|1:2|NAB), Archippus is named once alongside Philemon and Apphia as a host of the church, and a "fellow soldier." In bibleref|Colossians|4:17|NAB (ascribed to Paul), the church is instructed to tell Archippus to "complete the task that you have received in the Lord." No other information is given in the New Testament.
Role in tradition
He is believed to have been the first bishop of
Colossae ,Phyrgia , (nowTurkey ). Tradition further dicates that he was one of the 72 disciples appointed byJesus Christ in bibleref|Luke|10:1|NAB. In the Roman Catholic Church, Saint Archippus' feast day is observed on March 20.
