Main playable characters

Dart Feld

"'

Dart Feld is the main protagonist of "The Legend of Dragoon". He is 23 years old and has blond, spiky hair. Dart was one of the only two survivors of the destruction of the village of Neet when he was a child and somehow ended up being raised in Seles. Growing up beside Shana, he left to defeat the Black Monster when he became an adult. However when he found out Shana was kidnapped, he put that quest on hold in order to save her.

Dart is the most recent Dragoon to be chosen by the Dragoon Spirit of the Red-Eyed Dragon, a memento of his late father, Zieg Feld. When Dart is nearly killed by Kongol, Rose is able to awaken Dart's Dragoon Spirit, which overflows with power and enables Dart to defeat Kongol. Later on he acquires the Divine Dragon Spirit from Lloyd before facing off against Melbu Frahma.

While never directly stated, there is strong evidence suggesting that Dart's mother is the same Claire that was Haschel's daughter, which would make the two grandfather and grandson.

Voice Actor: John Butterfield

Seiyu: Seki Tomokazu

hana

Shana is a sweet, caring 18 year old woman, Dart's childhood friend. Shana is also the Moon Child, the spirit of the Virage Embryo, the God of Destruction, the final species of creature born from the Divine Tree, and the one species meant to destroy all others. She is also the twin sister of Princess Louvia (and thus the daughter of Queen Theresa), who was previously suspected to be the Moon Child and was eliminated by Rose as the Black Monster.

She is the adopted daughter of the mayor of Seles. When they were children, Shana and Dart often played together in the woods. She was targeted to be kidnapped by Emperor Doel's army for reasons she did not know, and was taken to Hellena Prison.

Dart infiltrated the prison and rescued Shana, and she joined him to help fight his way out. She develops a love for Dart, which goes unrequited for a large portion of the game because Dart thinks of her as a "baby sister". As the game progresses, their relationship gradually changes and he seemed to be more affectionate towards her.

At a certain point in the game, Shana becomes deathly ill due to poisons she contracted from the Dragon's Lair in the swamp, and Dart manages to obtain the Dragoon Spirit of the White-Silver Dragon in order to save her. Shana is able to activate the spirit herself and becomes the White-Silver Dragoon.

Throughout the game, Shana tends to exhibit strange powers if her life is in mortal danger or when she is around any of the creatures known as Virage. She also begins to feel hot at times, and becomes worried her Dragoon Spirit will leave her after an episode in Furni.

Eventually, in Deningrad, Shana faints and finds herself next to a strange, glowing sphere. When the group goes to see her, the Dragoon spirit grows hot, rejects Shana as a host, and choses Miranda instead. Shana decides to wait in Mille Seseau for them, asking Miranda to take her place.

Voice Actor: Donna Mae Wong

Seiyu: Okamura Akemi

Lavitz Slambert

Lavitz is the captain of the First Knighthood of Basil, and is loyal to King Albert above all else. He lives at home with his mother in a large house near Indels Castle. His father, Servi, was widely regarded as the best knight in Basil, but was betrayed and murdered by his best friend, Greham.

Lavitz and Dart meet in the notorious Hellena Prison. After successfully rescuing Shana, Dart agrees to travel with Lavitz to Indels Castle to confirm with King Albert that Sandora is planning to use a Dragon to take over Basil.

After Dart, Shana, and Rose help him defend the city of Hoax from attack, the group travels together to the Dragon's Lair to defeat the Green-Tusked Dragon, Feyrbrand, using the power of the Dragoons. There, Lavitz encounters Greham, who has now become the Dragoon of the Jade Dragon, using the Dragoon Spirit given to him by Emperor Doel, which allows him to control Feyrbrand. After an intense battle, the party kills both Feyrbrand and Greham, and Lavitz is chosen as the next Dragoon of the Jade Dragon.

Later, when King Albert is captured and taken to Hellena Prison, Lavitz and the party attempt to rescue him before the prison's head warden, Fruegel can execute him. They manage to kill Fruegel, and save the King's life, but not before Lloyd manages to steal the Moon Gem from the King's body. Enraged, Lavitz transforms into a Dragoon and attacks Lloyd, but Lloyd slays him using an ancient sword called the Dragon Buster.

In the Death City Mayfil, Lavitz is possessed by a demon named Zackwell and attacks the party, but is eventually able to regain control of himself and kills the demon by stabbing himself with his lance. Using the last of his strength, Lavitz opens up a path to Mayfil's Signet Sphere, before bidding farewell to the party and finally fading away.

Voice Actor: Mike Marx

Seiyu: Ooguro Kazuhiro

King Albert

Albert is the King of Basil. He inherited the throne when his father, Carlo, was assassinated by Albert's uncle, Doel. He regards Lavitz Slambert as his best friend and brother. After Lavitz was killed by Lloyd, Albert became the new bearer of the Jade Dragoon Spirit. He then decided to travel with Dart's party to avenge Lavitz's death, as well as to try to recover the Moon Gem that was stolen from him by Lloyd.

Throughout the tale, he grows ever more affectionate towards Princess Emille of Tiberoa and marries her at the end of the game.

Albert is extremely intelligent and knows much about a variety of topics, with a focus on plants and politics. He is often criticized by the group for talking too much. They also consider him a bit of a nerd because of his obsession with knowledge and learning; his love of libraries in particular.

Voice Actor: David Babich

Seiyu: Miki Shinichiro

Kongol

The last survivor of the Giganto race. All but a few of his species perished when humans attacked their home. Kongol was rescued by Doel, who raised him. Kongol devoted himself to Doel and to Sandora's cause. Kongol is now the last of his people.

During the events of the first saga, Kongol is Dart's enemy. Dart first encounters him in Hoax when he is protecting the fort against the Sandoras. Dart fights him a second time in the Black Castle. After being defeated a second time, he returns to the Home of Gigantos where he later encounters and finds Dart and the group once more. During this encounter, he saves their lives and joins the party.

It is revealed that Kongol is the Golden Dragoon when the party finds the Dragoon Spirit. Unlike the other characters, Kongol can receive his spirit in one of two places. Anytime between Kongol joining the party and visiting the Moon that Never Sets, a merchant in Lohan will have the spirit, and, when it reacts to Kongol, he offers to sell it for a thousand gold pieces. If it is not obtained there, Kongol will receive it from the memory of his Older brother, Indora, on The Moon that Never Sets.

Voice Actor: Ernie Fosselius

Seiyu: Sugawara Masashi

Rose

Rose is the ancient Dragoon of Darkness from the Dragon Campaign. She fought for liberation of the humans from the tyrant Winglies. She is one of the only original Dragoons to survive the Dragon Campaign. After the Dragon Campaign, the Winglies realized that the Crystal Sphere had been broken, and the soul of the God of Destruction had been released. To prevent the destruction of the world, Rose was given a choker by Claire Frahma to make her immortal. Whenever the soul of the God of Destruction was borne into a human, the Moon Child, Rose was to eliminate it, along with anyone who came into contact with or saw the baby, as they would become the creature's servants and assist the destruction of the world. For thousands of years, Rose set herself to this task, her most recent victim being the Princess Louvia and the inhabitants of the Village of Neet, the hometown of Dart.

Eighteen years later, after wandering through Serdio, Rose sees the Green Tusked Dragon Freyrbrand. She ventures deeper into the forest where she saves Dart from being killed by the dragon. Rose saves Dart a second time when he is battling Kongol in Hoax by activating the dormant Red-Eyed Dragoon Spirit and enabling Dart to save himself. Rose agrees to become a part of Dart's team and stays with him, imparting information regarding Dragoons from time to time.

Her history is later revealed to Dart by Emperor Diaz, and afterwards, she and Dart fight together in the desert of the Death Frontier. After a brief battle, she asks him to kill her and take revenge, but Dart stays his hand, saying that "The Black Monster is (now) dead." Rose continues to fight alongside Dart until the very end, when she and Zieg charge straight into Melbu Frahma to kill him once and for all, giving the other Dragoons time to take Shana and escape.

Voice Actor: Awele Makeba

Seiyu: Touma Yumi

Haschel

Master Haschel is the master of the Rogue School of Martial Arts and is implied to be Dart's grandfather, although it is never officially stated. He is a very strict teacher who demands much of his students and chastises them quickly when they make errors. In contrast, however, he is an extremely jovial and fun-loving man off the battlefield. He left his home village of Rouge to go search for his lost daughter, Claire, who ran away from the village after she seriously injured her partner in training. Haschel had berated her for placing a "murderous intent" into her fist.

When he left the village to go search for Claire, Haschel met Dart Feld, who was searching for the Black Monster, and they traveled together for a time. They run into each other again in Lohan, where Dart and Haschel enter a battle tournament. Haschel makes it to the semi-finals before he is beaten by Lloyd, placing third overall.

Haschel aids the party in helping defeat Emperor Doel, and becomes the next Dragoon of the Violet Dragon.

He finally confronts Claire during his challenge in Magic City Aglis, where he sees a vision and acknowledges there was nothing he could do to change the past, and again on the Moon that Never Sets, when he faces a shadowy image of Claire that has been possessed by the War God.

After the destruction of the Virage Embryo and the downfall of Melbu Frahma, Haschel returns to Rouge, where he trains Kongol in the way of the Rogue Art.

Voice Actor: Brian Vouglas

Seiyu: Inaba Minoru

Meru

Meru is a young Wingly girl who enjoys dancing. Her hometown is the Forest of Winglies, but she decided to leave the forest to explore the world. As a punishment for leaving, Meru was banished from returning and the majority of the Winglies shun her.

Meru joins Dart when she discovers he is traveling to the Valley of Corrupted Gravity. After travelling through the valley, Meru tags along to help Princess Emile and to pursue Lloyd. She confronts Lenus, where the Dragoon Spirit of the Blue Sea Dragoon chooses Meru as its master.

Meru is guilt-ridden over the many people her ancestors slaughtered before and during the Dragon Campaign. She also feels guilty about the Bardel Sister, a young girl who emulated Meru's desire to live in the human world and was killed by bandits. However, she is comforted when the others state that she committed none of those atrocities.

Meru finally confronts her past on the Moon that Never Sets by defeating the Archangel, a powerful supreme Wingly being, and realizes that bridging the gap between species is what she was meant to do.

Voice Actor: Lucy Kee

Seiyu: Kawakami Tomoko

Miranda

The First Sacred Sister of Mille Seseau, Miranda is the Sister of Arms and in charge of the military at Deningrad. She is fully devoted to Queen Theresa, and brooks no errors in the defense of the castle, going so far as to slap soldiers when they are seized by panic.

Miranda was left an orphan at a young age. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother abandoned her. When her father later died Miranda was taken in by the leader of Mille Seseau, Queen Theresa. She carries much lingering resentment to her mother, because her father was at least present. Miranda hates roses because whenever she pictured her mother's face she always remembered there was a rose on the mantle. Miranda eventually confronts her mother on the Moon that Never Sets and finally accepts that her mother was doing what she thought was best, citing that Queen Theresa was a better mother and gave Miranda everything she wanted, more so then Miranda's own birth mother could.

She first meets the party when they are pursuing Lloyd and she is hesitant of their abilities as Dragoons. When Shana collapses in the presence of the Sigil Stone, the White-Silver Dragoon Spirit chooses Miranda as its next master. She is unsure of what to do with it, but accompanies the party as a representative of Deningrad and as a Dragoon.

She is fierce and strict, and hides knowledge of the Divine Moon Mirror until Lloyd abducts Queen Theresa. She leads them to where it is kept, and after the party rescues Theresa, the Queen tells Miranda to travel with Dart and accept her role as Dragoon.

Voice Actor: Mo Mellady

Other Characters

These characters are not playable, but play important roles in the game.

Lloyd

A Wingly of great strength who ends up manipulating Emperor Doel, thus causing the Serdian War. Lloyd claims to work for a reborn Emperor Diaz. Lloyd's main purpose in Serdio, Tiberoa, and Mille Seaseau are to steal the divine moon objects: the Moon Gem from Serdio, the Moon Dagger from Tiberoa and the Moon Mirror from Mille Seaseau. Later it turns out it is Emperor Diaz who has been manipulating him with the promise of a utopia. When Lloyd finds out that what Emperor Diaz/Zieg has been planning is the destruction of the world, he changes sides and attacks his former master but has no chance and falls down into the depths below. Towards the end of the game Lloyd reappears and dies at the hands of Melbu Frahma, but not before giving Dart the Divine Dragoon Spirit and Rose the Dragon Buster. Lloyd is also the man responsible for the death of Lavitz Slambert.

Voice Actor: Jon Russell

Seiyu: Sho Hayami

Lenus

Lenus is a Wingly who followed Lloyd. Using the Dragoon Spirit of the Blue-Sea Dragon and the dragon Regole, Lenus terrorizes Tiberoa. In order to obtain the Moon Dagger, she disguises herself as Princess Emille from Tiberoa and holds the real one hostage in another dimension. The party foils her plans and defeats her in the Twin Towers in Fletz, though she escapes with the Moon Dagger. Lenus was the first Wingly to ever possess a Dragoon spirit, whose sole purpose upon creation were to fight and kill Winglies.

Queen Theresa

Queen Theresa was the Queen of Mille Seseau and adopted Miranda as her daughter. Unknown to anyone including the Queen, she was also the mother of Shana. According to the Japanese Player's Guide, Shana was hidden by Theresa's midwives because twins were considered unlucky in Mille Seseau.

Emperor Diaz

The Holy Emperor of Gloriano and the man who orchestrated the Humans' victory over the Winglies during the Dragon Campaign. According to Rose, he was killed during the Dragon Campaign, probably by the fires that scorched Gloriano. It is said at several points in the game that Emperor Diaz is still alive (although Rose denies this each time), and the new Diaz is the one supplying the Dragoon Spirits to Greham, Emperor Doel and Lloyd who then gives it to Lenus. This new Emperor was actually Zieg Feld.

Zieg Feld

The very first human being to be recognized by the Red-Eye Dragoon Spirit. He was the fiance of Rose, and fought alongside Rose and five other Dragoons in the Dragon Campaign. During the campaign he killed the Wingly leader Melbu Frahma but Melbu was able to petrify Zieg for 11,000 years. 11,000 after the petrification, the petrification wore off and Zieg was back to normal. He married the runaway daughter of Haschel, Claire (believing his fiancee Rose died after 11,000 years). The two had a child named Dart. While the three were living in Neet, the Black Monster destroyed the village and Zieg was presumed dead after Dart found his memento (the dragoon spirit).

During Dart's journey, the group encountered Zieg, who was possessed by the soul of Melbu Frahma. After Zieg broke all of the Signet Spheres, the Moon fell to the earth. Dart travelled into the moon, where Zieg stole the Red-Eye dragoon spirit from Dart. Zieg tried to finish off Dart and his friends but they defeated him and forced Melbu Frahma's spirit out of Zieg. After Dart and his friends defeated Melbu Frahma, Zieg and Rose finished Melbu off and the two died inside the moon when it exploded.

Voice Actor: Doug Boyd

Seiyu: Otsuka Akio

Melbu Frahma

Melbu Frahma was the dictator of the great Wingly civilization during the Dragon Campaign and the main antagonist of the game. At the last fight of the Dragon Campaign, he is seen making his final stand against the Red-Eye Dragoon Zieg Feld and a young Rose, where he meets his death with a stab wound through the heart from Zieg. He uses the last of his magic to inflict a dying curse of petrification upon Zieg. Melbu Frahma is then cast into Zieg's body through his Dragoon Spirit. He is eventually destroyed by both Zieg and Rose in The Moon That Never Sets.

Voice Actor: David Babich

Seiyu: Kaneto Shiozawa

Former Dragoons

The former Dragoons were the ones mentioned in the legends about the Dragon Campaign. They are all fought at some point in the game in some form. Zieg and Shirley are both encountered through the plot while the remaining four are optional bosses in Vellweb. Shirley is the only one not fought as a Dragoon and it is not a true fight.

Damia

Damia was the original Blue-Sea Dragoon. The daughter of a human and a mermaid, she was only fifteen when the Dragon Campaign began. Her mermaid heritage made her an outcast most of her life. She was afraid of being left alone again and so her soul stayed on Endiness. She did not appear in the FMV on Disc 2 but she is available to fight as an optional boss in the city of Vellweb on Disc 4.

yuveil

Syuveil was the original Jade Dragoon. He was afraid of what he saw at Mayfil and so his soul stayed on Endiness. He did not appear in the FMV on Disc 2 but he is available to fight as an optional boss in the city of Vellweb on Disc 4.

Belzac

Belzac was the original Golden Dragoon, and he bears somewhat of a resemblance to the new Golden Dragoon, Kongol. He died protecting Shirley from the attack of a Virage in Kadessa. He refused to believe Shirley had died and his soul stayed on Endiness. The party came across a Super Virage in the Forbidden Land which, in the English version, Rose incorrectly identified as the one that killed Belzac. This was actually the Super Virage Kanzas tried to kill, Belzac was killed by a regular Virage. He is available to fight as an optional boss in the city of Vellweb on Disc 4.

Kanzas

Kanzas was the original Violet Dragoon, and he bears somewhat of a resemblance to the new Violet Dragoon, Haschel. It was Shirley who convinced Kanzas to join the Dragoons which contrasted his bloodthirsty reputation. He self-destructed to defeat the Super Virage but he wanted to find Shirley and so his soul stayed on Endiness. He is available to fight as an optional boss in the city of Vellweb on Disc 4.

hirley

Shirley was the original White-Silver Dragoon. Her life was saved by Belzac. Her spirit resides at Shirley Shrine in Serdio where it was thought the Dragoni plant grew. Shirley fixed the original Dragoons souls at Vellweb so they would not be led to Death City Mayfil. She remained on Endiness to ensure their safety.

Dragoon Antagonists

Lenus, Greham and Doel were all enemies encountered during the game that were also capable of transforming into dragoons.

Greham

Former captain of the Fifth Knighthood. He ended up betraying Servi Slambert and bringing about the events which led to his death. Emperor Doel gave Greham the Dragoon Spirit of the Jade Dragon, and became Feyrbrand's master at some point. He was confronted by the Dragoons in the Dragon's Nest, and was mortally wounded by Lavitz.

Emperor Doel

Emperor Doel achieved fame as the monarch who started the Serdian Civil War after murdering his older brother, King Carlo. He reigned for nineteen years in Sandora, claiming that he was saving Serdio from an incompetent ruler. Emperor Doel married Karina who died prior to the events of the game. It was Doel who had Shana kidnapped and sent to Hellena Prison, under orders from Lloyd. Lloyd granted him two Dragoon Spirits, one of which (the Jade Dragoon Spirit) he gave to his trusted ally, Greham. The other, the Violet Dragoon Spirit, he kept for himself.

He fought Dart and his group at the Black Castle in Kazas. He was eventually mortally wounded, and died after telling the group to pursue Lloyd in Tiberoa. He reappears as a vision during Kongol's trial and Albert fights a shadowy Doel on the Moon That Never Sets.

Minor Characters

Claire Feld

Claire was the daughter of Haschel, and the mother of Dart Feld. When Claire was an adult, Haschel heard her sing a lullaby. When asked about it, Claire tells her father that she is going to teach it to her firstborn son. This is the same lullaby Shana sings in Furni, who is taught the tune by Dart. She was being trained in the art of Rouge by her father, but after losing her temper (which led to a close friend being injured), she was banished from her father's sight. Eventually, she met Zieg Feld, and they had a son, Dart. When the Black Monster came to Neet, Claire followed Zieg into the inferno. It is unknown what happened afterward, but it's likely that Claire died in Neet.

Luanna

Luanna was the Second Sacred Sister of Mille Seseau. She and Dart were the only survivors of Neet, an event which left her blind. In return, she is able to see into people's hearts. The Fourth Sacred Sister Setie travels with her.

Wink

The Third Sacred Sister of Mille Seseau, Wink's life was saved twice by Lloyd: once in Tiberoa and again in Mille Seseau. It is quite clear that she is in love with Lloyd, as she runs in front of Dart's blade when he is about to deal the finishing blow to Lloyd. She survives her wounds, but the event clearly shakes Lloyd.

Fruegel

Fruegel is the chief warden of Hellena Prison. He is tall, burly, and quite reckless, as well as being notoriously profane. He is also extremely sadistic, as proven by his tendencies to torture prisoners of Hellena, as well as feed them to the beast that lies within its dungeons.

It was Fruegel who was ordered by the man in black to take the head of King Albert when he was taken captive, and almost succeeded in doing so until Lavitz and the party arrived. Fruegel attacked them in hopes of butchering them, but Lavitz thrust his spear into the warden's belly and killed him.

Gehrich

Gehrich was a disgraced former student of Haschel who was training in the Rouge style of Martial Arts. He formed the Gehrich gang and has connections with Lenus. His second in command is the thief Mappi, who steals Dart's Dragoon gem and leads the party on a long quest to retrieve it.

King Carlo

King Carlo is the father of Albert and the former King of Serdio. He was deemed as an unfit ruler by his younger brother, Emperor Doel, who assassinated Carlo and caused the rift that sparked the Serdian Civil War. In the timeline of the game, Carlo is long dead before the player assumes the role of Dart.

Martel

Martel is a traveler that the player will meet in various locations during the game. She wants to cure her daughter, Lil, of a sickness, so she searches for an item called Stardust to make that possible. She will reward the player for bringing stardust to her, one item for every 10 stardust. The items for 10 through 40 stardust are unique character accessories, but the item for 50, the Vanishing Stone, is imperative in defeating the game's ultimate hidden boss, Magician Faust. When the player delivers all the stardust to Martel, she will wish for a bright future for her daughter.

Faust

Faust is an elderly Wingly, and master of Flanvel Tower. He was something of a "general" to Melbu Frahma, although his dialog seems to indicate he believes that he is stronger. His magic is immensely powerful, enough that he is able to make an image of himself capable of using all of his spells but receiving no damage. He has been alive since the Dragoon Campaign, when his tower was still active, and aspires to see his tower reactivated so that he can finally conquer the world. Faust's shadow is indestructible, resulting in a game over if encountered, unless the player acquires the Vanishing Stone from Martel.

Dabas

Dabas is a native merchant and proprietor of an antiques boutique in Lohan. Dart and company first encounter him upon saving his life at Volcano Villude. Dart and company again encounter Dabas when searching for the Dragoni plant as a means of healing Shana's dragon poisoning.
