Desert Sands Unified School District located in Palm Desert,California . The school had about 1600 students in the years 2005-2006. The number is now decreasing due to the finish construction of a new middle schoolColonel Mitchell Paige Middle School in La Quinta. The school's mascot is Peppy the Panther. The school's first year was 1978 as an alternative Junior High school for students living in the then "rural" communities of Palm Desert and La Quinta instead of going to Indio (Thomas Jefferson Middle and Woodrow Wilson Middle schools).Sports

Journalism is in charge of the school's newspaper, the Ipaw. There are many other electives also offered at PDCMS such as ASB (Associated Student Body) which assists in school activities as well as helping keep the school in good shape. Renaissance, another class, allows students to handle pep rallies and organize other school related events. Other electives offered are Fashion Design, Spanish, French, and Robotics.
Band is made up of four groups: Cadet, Concert, Marching, and Jazz. Cadet band allows students to learn instruments, Concert band is one step above. Jazz students play at pep rallies and fundraisers, these students are among the most elite players at the school. Marching band travels throughout California, performing in parades and winning awards.
