Island Press was established in 1984 as a nonprofit, nonpartisan
publisher , based in Washington, DC, specializing innatural history ,ecology , and conservation. It publishes 40 new books a year, aimed both at popular and scientific audiences.Authors and editors affiliated with Island Press include leading thinkers such as
E. O. Wilson ,Paul Ehrlich ,Donald Kennedy , Gretchen Daily,Joseph J. Romm andBruce Babbitt . Titles of note include "Cities in the Wilderness", "The World’s Water", "Research Priorities for Conservation Biology", "theMillennium Ecosystem Assessment ", "Lives Per Gallon", "High Tech Trash", "Faith in a Seed", "The Hype about Hydrogen " and "Naturalist". Island Press has been at the forefront of the ecosystem-based management and ecosystem services movements by publishing the earliest texts in each of these fields, with 1996’s "The Forgotten Pollinators" and 1997’s "Nature’s Services".It now also runs a

Island Press is governed by a 16-member Board of Directors comprised of representatives from the scientific, philanthropic, academic, and conservation communities. It has been funded through a combination of individual philanthropic investment and grants from foundations such as Packard, Ford, Moore, Hewlett, Tides, and Joyce. About half of its revenue is generated through sales, and half from the sponsoring organizations.
Island Press has collaborated with organizations such as the
