Southwestern Railroad (Tennessee)

Southwestern Railroad (Tennessee)

The Southwestern Railroad was a spur line that ran from Sparta, Tennessee, to connect with the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad.

The Southwestern Railroad Company was organized in the late 1860 following the American Civil War in an effort to provide a means to market for coal, produce, and other goods from White County, Tennessee, to major markets. Former Confederate general George Gibbs Dibrell served as president, and in 1869, led efforts to complete the new railroad to Sparta. Shortly thereafter, it was extended to the vast Bon Air coal mines (which Dibrell owned).
