It was released by Arista Records in 1986, and peaked at number 1 on the Contemporary Jazz Albums chart, number 5 on the Jazz Albums chart, number 6 on the Billboard 200 and number 8 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[2]
The album was certified 5× Platinum by the RIAA.[3] April 2011 8x platinum RIAA sold 28 million internationally.

- The song Sade was indeed created with the group of the same name in mind. However, Kenny claims he's never met the band nor Sade herself.
- There are at least three versions of the CD that have been released in the U.S. The earlier release has a longer version of "What Does It Take." The later one has a shortened version identical to the one usually played by radio stations. There is also a version that features a different track order while including a bonus track "And You Know That" with an uncredited vocalist.
