Assiniboine Community College is responsible for agriculture training for the province of Manitoba, and the Agriculture and Environment division offers agriculture courses in communities across Manitoba.

Campuses

The main ACC campus is located in Brandon. A satellite campus is located in Dauphin, and training sites are located in Winnipeg, Neepawa, Russell, Swan River, and Steinbach.

Programs

ACC offers contract courses in Brandon and throughout Assiniboine’s catchment area, and distance-delivered training is an area undergoing huge growth. It also provides training certification of applicators and dispensers of agricultural pesticides for the entire province.ACC offers Certificates in Organic Agriculture and in Agriculture Studies. The College also has the provincial mandate for Practical Nursing training. Training is conducted at the permanent sites at Brandon and Winnipeg and various rotating sites throughout the province. Assiniboine is the leader in distance education technology. A variety of courses are made available either through traditional correspondence methods, teleconferencing, video-conferencing on-line computer and Internet technology, or any combination of delivery methods. History

Assiniboine Community College has an interesting 40-year history. Originally called the Brandon Vocational Training Centre, it opened its doors in February 1961, with a staff of two administrative personnel and two instructors, two course offerings, and a total of 24 students. Soon renamed the Manitoba Vocational Training Centre, it grew steadily. By 1966, a staff of six administrative personnel and 18 instructors handled 11 different program offerings with a capacity of 300 students.

On December 15, 1969, Manitoba’s three Technical Vocational schools entered a new phase of development when they became community colleges. The Manitoba Vocational Training Centre was renamed Assiniboine Community College, while the technical colleges in Winnipeg and The Pas became Red River and Keewatin Community Colleges.

In 1982, an expansion to the original college building was completed, which included additional classroom space, heavy duty and general shops, educational support services and Students’ Association offices and store. The expansion allowed the college to consolidate facilities and abandon inadequate training space at other Brandon locations.

Campus

Assiniboine is located in Brandon’s east end and Victoria Avenue East. The Brandon Adult Learning Centre in downtown Brandon, which came into operation in the fall of 1995 offers adult upgrading for various senior high school courses. Assiniboine’s Parkland Campus in Dauphin offers several full-time day programs and a range of evening and off-campus courses. The college has a regional centre, Parkland Southwest in Russell, which was opened in 1992. Assiniboine also has training facilities in Neepawa, Swan River and Steinbach.

In the fall of 2007, the College began the first phase of the move to a new campus at the former Brandon Mental Health Centre.

Relocation

Assiniboine Community College is preparing to move its campus from Eastern Victoria Ave. to what was formally called the Brandon Mental Health Center on the North Hill. The year the move is scheduled to occur is unknown at this point in time.

Board of Governors

ACC is governed by a Board of Governors as legislated in the Colleges and Consequential Amendments Act of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. The Board is responsible to the Minister of Advanced Education and governors are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The ACC Board of Governors considers itself to be a policy board and has adopted a governing style that emphasizes outward vision, encourages diversity, provides strategic leadership and that clearly distinguishes between the work of the Board and college staff. The Board is responsible for establishing college policy, developing the long-range vision and mission statement, ensuring effective and efficient management of resources, and maintaining communication with the community the college serves.
