History
The school was founded in 1905 and initially attended only by male students, but made coeducational in 1957. As it was common during the times of Yugoslavia, the school was officially named Gimnazija Ognjen Prica, after the national hero and teacher, but today adopts its current name which simply means "second gymnasium" in Bosnian.
Education
The school is a certified IB World School, offering MYP and Diploma programmes. Thus, Druga gimnazija is the first and so far the only high school in Bosnia and Herzegovina that offers a four-year education implemented according to the international standards.
Besides offering IB, the school follows the standard B&H gymnasium Matura programme, in which the students study two years of general high school curriculum, and then choose their desired field of study for another two years. Druga gimnazija offers fields of natural sciences, linguistics, social sciences and math. Additionally, the school also offers a fully math/computer science/physics focused four year programme.
The students are usually divided into six homerooms per year, each housing about 30 students, randomly (except the MYP) at the start of their tuition, and then sorted later on, based on their chosen field of study; each homeroom has the same class timetable throughout the year (once again, except the IB Diploma programme, to which all the students as well as outsiders have to pass the entrance exam, and have a choice of subjects). This method is commonly used by the B&H Matura programme, but deviates from EU and USA methods. It has been under scrutiny by certain educational institutions.[citation needed]
Achievements
Druga gimnazija has been a science focused school for a number of years, and established a tradition of exceptional math, computer science and physics students, who have won eighteen medals at the Olympic competitions in both mathematics and informatics, in the last 30 years, ten of them having been won since Bosnia and Herzegovina’s independence in 1992.
