Submarine Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet

The Submarine Force US Atlantic Fleet (SUBLANT) is the Type Commander for U.S. submarines in the Atlantic Fleet. It was established in 1941 but U.S. submarine operations in the Atlantic go back to before the First World War. Established on 7 December 1941 RADM Richard S. Edwards, was assigned as the first Force Commander.

The principal responsibility of the Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet (COMSUBLANT) is to operate, maintain, train, and equip submarines in support of Fleet and National tasking. Today the Atlantic Fleet Submarine Force numbers 40 submarines and more than 15,000 officer, enlisted, and civilian personnel providing combat ready submarines in the Atlantic, Arctic, Eastern Pacific, and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Commander, Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet, has additional duties as commander of NATO's Allied Submarine Command and also Commander, Naval Submarine Forces. Subordinate to COMSUBLANT are three Submarine Groups and eight Submarine Squadrons.
