Bairro Sul (South Quarter), also known as Lapa, is a neighourhood and district of the portuguese city of
Póvoa de Varzim . it is the fishing district of the city located around a hill-sheltered bay known as "Enseada da Póvoa" (Póvoa Cove).The district borders
Póvoa de Varzim City Center to the north, to the East Matriz/Mariadeira , and to the South, the city ofVila do Conde .Bairro Sul grew from the population of fishermen that came from
Bairro da Matriz and its structure of streets parallel to the coast with fishermen's houses - "beehive of the fishermen" — was already reasonably developed in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the neighbourhood expanded southwards to neighbouringVila do Conde , giving rise to Caxinas and Poça da Barca districts of that city.The main district festivals are the
Feast of the Assumption , one of the largest of this kind in Portugal, the pinnacle of the procession occurs in front of Póvoa's seaport, where fireworks are launched from carefully arranged boats and Bairro Sul's Saint Peter festival.
