Jenin was known in ancient times as the
Canaanite village of Ein-Ganeem or Tel Jenin.cite book|title=Palestine:A Guide|author=Mariam Shahin|publisher=Interlink Books|year=2005|isbn=156656557X|page=183] [cite web|title=Military: Jenin|publisher=GlobalSecurity.org|accessdate=2007-05-15|url=http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/palestine/jenin.htm] The city of Ein-Ganeem is mentioned in theHebrew Bible as the city of theLevite s of theTribe of Issachar . [Book of Joshua Chapter 19, 21 "and Remeth, and En-gannim, and En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez";Joshua Chapter 21, 29: "Jarmuth with the open land about it, En-gannim with the open land about it";] After some years, the city's name was changed to Ginat. In book of Yehudit [ Yehudit 3, 10] the settlement is mentioned as Gini. TheJewish historianJosephus also mentioned Ganim as a city in northernSamaria . [The Wars of the Jews , 3, 3, 4 ] The modern Arabic name "Jenin" ultimately derives from this ancient name. The origin of the place as Ein-Ganeem was recognised byIshtori Haparchi . In the 20th century C.E., theState of Israel built a nearbyIsraeli settlement ,Ganim , also named after the ancient village. This settlement was evacuated in August 2005 as part ofIsrael's unilateral disengagement plan . Another Israeli community was also given the name of Ein Ganim, today part ofPetah Tikva .Jenin was a center of civil unrest during the
1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine which was prompted by the assassination by the British of SheikhIzz ad-Din al-Qassam , for whom aHamas military wing was since named. It was also used byFawzi al-Qawuqji 's partisans. OnAugust 25 ,1938 , the after the British Assistant District Commissioner was assassinated in his Jenin office, a large British force with explosives entered the town. After ordering the inhabitants to leave, about one quarter of the town was blown up. [ "The British in Jenin", "History Today", July 2002, pp2-4.]In the
1948 Arab-Israeli War , the city was defended by Iraqi forces, then captured briefly by forces ofIsrael i Karmeli Brigade during the "10 Days' fighting" following the cancellation of the first cease-fire. The offensive was actually a feint designed to draw Arab forces away from the criticalSiege of Jerusalem , and gains in that sector were quickly abandoned when Arab reinforcements arrived. The southern entrance of Jenin holds a cemetry of the martyrs of the
Iraq i army and some Palestinians who fought with them against the Israeli forces.
